Live DEMO painting

Tonights painting. I will be doing a lot of these during our IW demo day in London. Come and hang out with us!

info:http://www.industryworkshops.co.uk/

I enjoy doing these sketches, letting the music drive the feel and mood. All is free hand and painted. No trickery , 3d or photography used. I kind of like staying within that limitation during these as a challenge and to push the narrative with it. I hope you enjoy the process. The final image was another 40 min or so, painted while the video was being processed. Just polishing up details and definition.

"You can't teach art, you can't teach persuasion, but you can teach knowledge"

If that title grabbed you then i am sure you will find more insightful quotes from Advertising legend Bill Bernbach in the following clips.  Many of his thoughts and ideas echo so well with my artistic and creative philosophy. For those of you who are not familiar with Bill Bernbach,  He was a big name in advertising in the 50s - 60s. So much of todays advertising is built on his legacy and that true good advertising is art.

Why on earth would this be interesting for me as concept artist or visual fx artist creative?

Before Bill, Most of the time i felt like a cog in a wheel of a huge machinery wether it was film, games, or any creative project. I felt like i moved a couch left or rightI came to realise that each role we have we need to understand what it is, why we do it, to whom we do it before we do it. The understanding to who we are delivering to helps your creative decision making. When you are faced with a visual task your job becomes  a bit easier if you understand what the director or supervisor wants to achieve. A single word can often suffice to help you on the right path. Plus you feel you are being creative and not just filling an empty spot because you understand you are selling an idea rather then performing an  empty task.

Makoto Inspired sketch project.

A little weekend project. This time around it's about doing an artwork that is heavily inspired by the most excellent Makoto Kobayashi's designs. Not only does he do marvellous mech designs but also  lots of beyond the design story telling too. He creates the models and puts them into context. There are sources for getting his model kits for those of you who are keen to spend a bit. So this weekend i decided to sit down and let some of his amazing work inspire this design and piece. I also wanted to recreate that wonderful watercolour/sketchy feeling with the renders.

Lots of organic and curvy shapes, very animal like big features mixed with the military capabilities.

Here are the following results:

Black Sails SE3 E1 Matte Extension

Screne Scene approached me to do a shot for the latest season of Black sails TV show. The shot  was a set extension where we had to come up up with the idea of extending this vast gold hold.  Compare plate and one of the last versions of the DMP. Last fire comp was treated by Screne scene. I ended up modelling the piles and columns, that way i could move things around to try different placement layouts.  More additional CG-gold was around the actors feet and fg.

The plate that was provided:

Edward Curtis and the documentation on Native Indians

In 1906 J.P. Morgan offered Curtis $75,000 to produce a series on the North American Indian. It was to be in 20 volumes with 1,500 photographs. Morgan was to receive 25 sets and 500 original prints as his method of repayment. 222 complete sets were eventually published. Curtis' goal was not just to photograph, but to document, as much American Indian (Native American) traditional life as possible before that way of life disappeared. He wrote in the introduction to his first volume in 1907: "The information that is to be gathered ... respecting the mode of life of one of the great races of mankind, must be collected at once or the opportunity will be lost." Curtis made over 10,000 wax cylinder recordings of Indian language and music. He took over 40,000 photographic images from over 80 tribes. He recorded tribal lore and history, and he described traditional foods, housing, garments, recreation, ceremonies, and funeral customs. He wrote biographical sketches of tribal leaders, and his material, in most cases, is the only recorded history.
